Committees
Bar Admissions Ceremony
This Committee's primary responsibility will be to contact Judges and Deans for their participation in each ceremony and attend the fall and spring ceremonies.
Bridge the Gap Seminar
This committee will coordinate a CLE seminar geared towards assisting new admittees with the transition from law school to the practice of law.
Child Advocacy
This committee will focus on legal issues concerning children and promoting changes in the law to benefit children.
Disaster Legal Assistance
This committee, with members in all Mississippi counties, will work with local authorities in advising the public in the affected areas of their legal rights and responsibilities following a natural disaster.
Diversity in the Law
This committee will encourage minority members to participate in Young Lawyers Division activities and promote minority involvement in the legal profession with college undergraduate and law students.
High School Mock Trial Competition
This committee will focus on selecting the case, recruiting judges, fund raising and the directing of each Regional location and the Statewide Competition.
Law Day Project
This committee will plan and prepare activities with local governments and schools which recognize and celebrate our country's heritage of liberty under law and how the rule of law makes our democracy possible.
Law School Relations
This committee will promote and conduct a 3rd year Professionalism program during the Spring of 2006 at the University of Mississippi Law School and Mississippi College School of Law by working with the faculty and student leadership.
Pro Bono Committee
With the recent amendment to Rule 6.1--requiring lawyers to report annually their hours of pro bono legal services--the Young Lawyers Division Pro Bono committee will promote the delivery of legal services to the poor by working with the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project and area Legal Services groups, notifying young lawyers of the opportunities to do pro bono work, and facilitating the assignment of cases by MVLP and Legal Services to young lawyers.
Publications
The primary responsibility will be to publish and market a Practice Manual for all members.
Seminars
This committee will plan and implement a series of live CLE tele-conferences throughout the year.
Teen Court
This committee will help educate and inform youth and county court judges as well as area schools about this alternative sentencing program for first time juvenile offenders that they can implement in their area. Juries made up of local high school students hear from both student prosecutors and defense lawyers and then determine the sentence for these teen offenders.
