Hattiesburg High School Team 1 Wins Mock Trial Championship Title
Hattiesburg High School Team 1 earned the state championship title in the final round of The Mississippi Bar Young Lawyers Division 25th Annual Mississippi High School Mock Trial Competition held at the Old Supreme Court Chambers at the Capitol on Saturday, March 8. As the state champions, Hattiesburg High School will represent Mississippi at the 2008 National High School Mock Trial Competition in Wilmington, DE on May 8-10, 2008.
Resurrection Catholic School from Pascagoula earned the second place trophy gavel. In earlier rounds Friday and Saturday at the Hinds County Courthouse, Long Beach High School Team 1 earned third place; Sacred Heart High School of Hattiesburg earned fourth place; Kelly Law Office of Jackson earned fifth place; and Jackson Academy earned sixth place.
The goals of the Mississippi High School Mock Trial Competition are to promote greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures, and the
Mississippi judicial systems; to improve basic life skills, such as critical thinking, reading, speaking, and advocacy; to improve communication and cooperation among key community members, including schools, teachers, legal professionals, and citizens; to heighten appreciation for the principle of equal justice for all; to promote an awareness of current legal issues and to promote the exchange of ideas among students throughout the state of Mississippi while providing a rewarding and memorable experience of interaction.
