The Mississippi Bar Association - Professionalism

The Mississippi Bar has long considered that professionalism is important to its members  and to the maintenance of the Justice System.  The Bar has a standing committee on professionalism.  Professionalism, while involving, to a degree, the Rules of Ethics by which the professions governs itself, professionalism goes further than the “thou shalt nots” with aspirational goals for the betterment of the Justice System in this country.  Membership on the Professionalism Committee is open to any member of the Bar and provides a credit of up to one hour toward the continuing legal education requirement on Ethics/Professionalism per year.

Professionalism Pilot Mentoring Program

The Bar’s Professionalism Committee is in the initial stages of establishing a pilot mentoring program for new admittees. The committee in cooperation with both Mississippi law schools is assigning admittees to participate in the pilot program. Designated admittees may download applications here:

James O. Dukes Professionalism Program
This program was instituted by the late James O. Dukes, a former President of the Mississippi Bar.  It has since been named in his honor because of his dedication to the subject of professionalism and to law students and future lawyers.  The program provides an introduction to professionalism for incoming first year law students at the University of Mississippi School of Law and the Mississippi College School of Law as part of their orientation program.  Materials furnished by the Bar concerning professionalism and the types of dilemmas faced by practitioners on a daily basis are given to the law students to consider.  Volunteer lawyers and judges act as facilitators for small groups of students at both schools assisting and guiding them through a discussion of the issues with each of the topics presented and giving them insight into the high value that the Mississippi Bar places upon the subject of professionalism.  Typically the session will begin with a keynote address, usually from a member of the Mississippi Supreme Court followed by the group discussion sessions.  Lawyers and judges who participate in these programs report a great deal of personal satisfaction.  They are also allowed the claim two hours of continuing legal education credit in the Ethics/Professionalism area.
