Happy Law Day! A great way for Members of the Mississippi Bar to celebrate is to help those needing legal assistance. Below are two excellent opportunities for volunteering your time and expertise.
YLD Disaster Legal Assistance
The Mississippi Bar Young Lawyers Division’s Disaster Legal Assistance Committee is seeking volunteer attorneys to provide telephone assistance to victims of the recent severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding on April 12, 2020, in Covington, Jefferson Davis, and Jones Counties. In conjunction with FEMA and the MS Emergency Management Agency, a toll-free hotline has been established at the Bar Center for victims to call for legal assistance. At this time, volunteer attorneys are needed only for telephone legal assistance. Survivors will call the hotline, and an intake form will be completed and then emailed to the volunteer attorneys on a rotating basis.
Volunteer attorneys will respond to the victims by telephone. If you are willing to assist, please email Rene' Garner at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer. Please include your name, phone, city, and email. To expedite processing, please make the subject line of your email "April 2020 Storms Telephone Assistance Volunteer”.
Mississippi Free Legal Answers
Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic. Qualifying users post their civil legal question to their state's website. Users will then be emailed when their question receives a response. Attorney volunteers, who must be authorized to provide pro bono assistance in their state, log in to the website, select questions to answer, and provide legal information and advice. Volunteer attorneys will not answer criminal law questions.
