The Mississippi Bar has been selected to receive the ABA’s 2019 Harrison Tweed Award. This award is given on behalf of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. The award recognizes bar associations that have made extraordinary efforts to improve civil legal services or indigent defense services available to people living in poverty in their communities. In 2018, over 450 Mississippi lawyers provided over 1,300 hours of free legal services to 850 Mississippians in need. Legal clinic events were organized and supported by the Mississippi Access to Justice Commission, chancellors and their staffs in every judicial district in the state, the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project, Legal Services offices, local bar associations, and volunteer lawyers.
