is working on or not. Roy%u2019s practical tips for how to organize a file and his daily study of new developments in the law are habits that we%u2019ve all learned from, just as much as from watching him cross-examine a witness or defuse a tense settlement negotiation with his trademark quiet courtesy. Even in the final weeks before his retirement, Roy was leading and teaching%u2014trying yet another case to verdict, this time in federal court in Midland, Texas, alongside a team of young lawyers he had prepared for the moment. It%u2019s hard to say who was more spellbound, the other lawyers or the jury, when Roy cross-examined a surprise witness and, in that examination, extracted the key admission that won the case. As he returned to counsel table after that examination, another member of the team whispered wide-eyed, %u201cAnd that is how you do it.%u201d Those are fitting words for Roy%u2019s whole career, really. Lest anyone think that being a largerthan-life lawyer, husband, father, and mentor also means that Roy has a correspondingly large ego, not so. Roy loves to tell a story, but even better if it%u2019s a joke at his own expense. He and Nancy have moved to Connecticut to be closer to their daughters and their families; now that he%u2019s reading to the grandchildren on the regular, we hope he%u2019s sharing the story of the time he dressed up like the Man in the Yellow Hat as part of the opening celebration for the Museum of Art%u2019s Curious George exhibit (we have the photos to prove it) and teaching them all his ping-pong tricks. Lucky grandchildren: Larrison says that during the four years that she and her kids lived in Jackson, Roy and Nancy babysat for the twins %u201cEVERY SINGLE Friday night.%u201d She says Roy %u201csecretly had two missions: to teach Cliff the finer points of Saints football and to teach Loulou his dance moves. Fortunately, the investments paid off%u2014Loulou still loves to dance. And there is nothing Cliff would rather do than watch football, though I%u2019m sorry to note that he%u2019s currently a fair-weather fan, meaning the Saints are no longer his #1. Maybe now that Dad is living in the New York metro he%u2019ll finally have time to get Cliff back on the right path.%u201d We hope that%u2019s true. For our part, we already miss Roy%u2019s steady daily presence in the office, his incredulous low whistle and exclamation of %u201cYou don%u2019t say!%u201d, and his willingness to pitch in to help in any kind of crisis. We are thrilled that he%u2019s been honored with the Bar%u2019s Lifetime Achievement Award. It is so well-deserved. We join Roy%u2019s other colleagues in The Mississippi Bar in congratulating him.
